UK Introduces Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Requirement for Non-UK Visitors
As of 2 April 2025, a new UK ETA requirement is now in place for all non-UK visitors. An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) must be obtained before travelling to the United Kingdom. This change is especially important for patients, companions, and families involved in medical repatriation or air ambulance transfers with SkyCare. Ensuring an approved ETA in advance will help avoid delays or complications at the border.
🔒 What Is the UK ETA Requirement?
An ETA is a digital permission to travel to the UK. It is not a visa, tax, or entry permit, but rather an authorisation to board a flight bound for the UK. Visitors will still be subject to UK border checks on arrival.
British and Irish citizens and those with status under the EU Settlement Scheme do not require an ETA.
✅ Why the UK ETA Requirement Matters for SkyCare Medical Flights
To avoid delays or complications with repatriation or air ambulance transfers:
-
All non-UK travellers must have an ETA approved before any flight confirmation.
-
GAR (General Aviation Report) submissions have been updated and must now be submitted two days before departure, to ensure any unauthorised travellers are identified in time.
-
Anyone flagged as “not authorised to travel” during GAR submission will be advised immediately to apply for an ETA and confirm once approved.
📲 How to Apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
Applying is quick and simple, especially using the UK ETA app.
Apply via:
-
UK ETA app (Download on Google Play or Apple App Store)
-
GOV.UK website if you don’t have access to a smartphone
What you’ll need:
-
£16 fee
-
Passport and contact details
-
A digital photo (meeting GOV.UK requirements)
-
Answers to a short set of security questions
⏱️ How Long Does It Take?
Most applicants receive an automatic decision within minutes when using the app. However, travellers should apply at least three working days in advance, in case the application requires further review.
Each approved ETA allows:
-
Multiple entries into the UK
-
Stays of up to six months at a time
-
Validity for two years or until the passport expires — whichever comes first
📌 Final Notes for SkyCare Clients
Please ensure all patients, family members, or accompanying travellers who are not UK or Irish citizens have applied for and received an approved ETA well ahead of travel.
