When an NHS neonatal unit needs additional transport capacity, the challenge is not simply finding an ambulance. The baby may require a specialist neonatal doctor and nurse, an appropriate transport incubator, respiratory support, continuous monitoring and a clinically planned transfer between referring and receiving hospitals.

We can provide the ambulance, neonatal clinical team and specialist equipment as a complete transport solution, or work alongside an NHS team where only transport and operational support are required.

This gives Trusts an additional option for urgent uplift, planned repatriation, capacity support, appointments and longer-distance neonatal transfers when local or network resources are committed.

A Complete Neonatal Transport Team — Not Simply an Ambulance

Our service is built around the clinical requirements of the baby. Depending on the case, SkyCare can provide neonatal doctors, nurses and other appropriately experienced clinicians together with the vehicle, equipment and operational coordination required for the transfer.

For an NHS neonatal unit, that can mean avoiding the need to release its own specialist clinicians from the ward solely to staff the journey. Where a Trust prefers to send its own clinical team, SkyCare can instead provide the specialist ambulance, drivers and agreed transport support.

When NHS Trusts Can Use SkyCare

SkyCare can support planned and clinically appropriate neonatal movements including transfers to a higher level of care, repatriation to a local neonatal unit, capacity and overflow support, inter-hospital transfers, outpatient or specialist appointments, and longer-distance transfers across the UK.

Each request is clinically reviewed and coordinated with the relevant referring and receiving teams. Acceptance by the receiving hospital and an appropriate destination for the baby must be confirmed before transfer.

Specialist Equipment and Respiratory Support

Neonatal transport requires equipment selected for the baby’s size, condition and treatment requirements. SkyCare’s neonatal capability includes transport-incubator systems, neonatal monitoring, syringe pumps, resuscitation equipment and respiratory support. Where clinically indicated and appropriate for the transfer plan, this can include invasive ventilation, CPAP, BiPAP/DuoPAP and high-flow humidified oxygen.

Equipment requirements, staffing and clinical responsibility are agreed as part of the case review before mobilisation.

Supporting NHS Neonatal Capacity

Regional NHS neonatal transport services remain central to neonatal retrieval and transfer across the UK. SkyCare is not intended to replace those networks. Our role is to provide NHS Trusts with an additional specialist option when private capacity is required, when a planned transfer sits outside local availability, or when releasing the Trust’s own neonatal clinicians would place additional pressure on the unit.
