Is a Portable Oxygen Concentrator Right for You?
Portable oxygen concentrators provide different types and levels of oxygen delivery. Some provide pulse-dose oxygen only, while others can also provide continuous-flow oxygen. It is therefore important that you know the type of oxygen therapy, setting or flow rate that has been prescribed for you before selecting a machine.
You are responsible for ensuring that the portable oxygen concentrator you select is suitable for your prescribed oxygen therapy and medical requirements. If you’re unsure whether a portable oxygen concentrator is appropriate for you, or which oxygen delivery method or setting you require, please speak to your doctor, respiratory specialist or prescribing clinician before hiring.
Our team is still here to help. We can explain how our equipment works, the oxygen delivery options available, battery performance, charging, accessories and practical considerations when travelling with a portable oxygen concentrator. However, we cannot prescribe oxygen therapy or determine which equipment is clinically appropriate for you.
Once you know your prescribed oxygen requirements, we’ll make the rental process as straightforward as possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, many portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) are approved for use on commercial aircraft, including the Inogen Rove 6 supplied by SkyCare Repatriation. However, approval of the equipment does not automatically mean you can use it on every flight. Each airline has its own medical policies, documentation requirements and battery regulations, so it is important to check these well before you travel.
Some airlines may ask you to complete a Medical Information Form (MEDIF) or provide a Fit to Fly certificate from your doctor, particularly if you have recently been unwell or your oxygen requirements have changed. Others may simply ask for confirmation that your portable oxygen concentrator is an approved model.
You should never rely on the aircraft’s electrical power supply to operate or charge your portable oxygen concentrator. Seat power outlets may not be available, may not function correctly or may be disabled during the flight. Always travel with sufficient fully charged batteries to cover your entire journey, including airport waiting times, delays, diversions and any onward connections.
Before you travel, SkyCare Repatriation recommends confirming:
- That your airline permits your portable oxygen concentrator.
- Whether medical clearance or a MEDIF form is required.
- The minimum battery capacity you must carry.
- Any restrictions on where the equipment may be stored or used during the flight.
Our team is happy to explain the specifications, battery options and airline approval information for the equipment we supply. You should confirm your individual oxygen requirements with your clinician and your airline’s requirements directly with the airline before travelling.
The number of batteries required depends on your oxygen prescription, the model of portable oxygen concentrator, the length of your journey and your airline’s requirements.
As a general rule, you should carry enough fully charged batteries to power your portable oxygen concentrator for the entire duration of your journey, including time spent at the airport before departure, the flight itself, transfers and any unexpected delays.
Many airlines recommend carrying battery capacity equal to at least 150% of your planned flight time, while some airlines may require even more. For example, if your total flying time is four hours, you may need enough batteries to provide at least six hours of operation.
Battery duration also varies depending on your prescribed oxygen setting. Higher pulse-dose settings use more power and reduce battery life, so two passengers using the same concentrator may require different numbers of batteries.
Battery runtime information is provided for each of our portable oxygen concentrators to help you plan your journey. You are responsible for ensuring you carry sufficient battery capacity for your complete journey and comply with your airline’s requirements. Additional batteries can be added to your rental where required.
Not everyone travelling with a portable oxygen concentrator requires a Fit to Fly certificate. The requirement depends on your medical condition, your treating clinician’s advice and your airline’s individual policy.
If you have a stable medical condition and routinely use oxygen, your airline may not require any additional documentation. However, if you have recently been admitted to hospital, experienced a change in your condition or require oxygen for the first time, your airline may request medical clearance before allowing you to travel.
Some airlines ask passengers to complete a Medical Information Form (MEDIF), which is reviewed by the airline’s medical department before travel. Others may request a letter from your GP or respiratory specialist confirming that you are fit to travel and detailing your oxygen requirements.
If you are unsure whether you require medical clearance, SkyCare Repatriation can advise you before you travel. We also recommend contacting your airline as early as possible, as some medical approvals can take several days to process.
Yes. Portable oxygen concentrators are frequently used by passengers travelling on cruise holidays and can provide a convenient source of oxygen whilst onboard and during shore excursions.
Before travelling, you should always inform your cruise operator if you intend to bring a portable oxygen concentrator, as they may have specific policies regarding medical equipment. Some cruise lines request advance notification or require medical documentation before departure.
It is also important to ensure you have sufficient battery capacity for excursions ashore and any periods where mains power may not be immediately available. Unlike aircraft, cruise ships generally provide opportunities to recharge batteries in your cabin, but it is still sensible to carry spare batteries when leaving the ship.
If your cruise begins overseas, remember that you will also need enough battery capacity for your flights to and from the embarkation port. Our team can explain the available equipment and battery options to help you plan your rental, but you should ensure your selected concentrator meets your prescribed oxygen requirements.
SkyCare Repatriation provides portable oxygen concentrator rental throughout the United Kingdom. Equipment is prepared, function tested and cleaned before dispatch to help ensure it arrives ready for use.
We aim to dispatch equipment in plenty of time for your departure, and we recommend submitting your hire request at least four working days before you travel.
Where possible, equipment should be delivered before your departure date, allowing time to familiarise yourself with its operation, charge the batteries if required and ask any questions before your journey begins.
If your travel is urgent, please contact SkyCare Repatriation directly. We will always do our best to help, although we cannot guarantee same-day or next-day dispatch.
If you experience a problem with your portable oxygen concentrator whilst travelling, contact SkyCare Repatriation as soon as possible. Our team will work with you to identify the issue and provide advice on the most appropriate course of action.
Many questions can be resolved quickly over the telephone, whether they relate to battery charging, alarms, operating the concentrator or general guidance on using the equipment. If we believe the issue cannot be resolved remotely, we will discuss the options available based on your location and circumstances.
We strongly recommend carrying all supplied accessories, including your chargers and spare batteries, throughout your journey and reading the operating instructions before you travel. Taking a little time to familiarise yourself with the equipment before departure can often prevent minor issues while you are away.
Our aim is to ensure you can continue your journey with confidence, and we will always do our best to support you should you require assistance during your hire period.
Portable oxygen concentrators are used by people with a range of respiratory and medical conditions who have been prescribed supplemental oxygen. The type of concentrator you require will depend on your prescribed oxygen therapy, including whether you need pulse-dose or continuous-flow oxygen and the setting or flow rate prescribed for you.
People who use supplemental oxygen may have conditions including:
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary Fibrosis
- Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)
- Bronchiectasis
- Heart failure where supplemental oxygen has been prescribed
- Other medical conditions requiring supplemental oxygen
Having one of these conditions does not automatically mean that a particular portable oxygen concentrator is suitable for you. You are responsible for ensuring that the equipment you select matches your prescribed oxygen requirements. If you’re unsure which type of oxygen delivery, setting or flow rate you require, please speak to your doctor, respiratory specialist or prescribing clinician before hiring.
