For a medically stable patient who can travel seated on a scheduled flight but should not travel alone, a medical escort can be a more economical alternative to a private air ambulance.

A commercial stretcher flight may be suitable for a stable patient who cannot sit upright for a long journey but does not require a dedicated air ambulance.
Availability depends on the airline, route and medical approval. Several seats are normally blocked to install the stretcher and privacy screen, and a medical escort usually travels with the patient. These journeys take longer to arrange than a private air ambulance, so early planning is important.

There is no guaranteed departure time because every case depends on the patient’s medical condition, the availability of an appropriate aircraft or airline route, medical clearance, visas or travel documents, airport permissions and ground transport.
A private air ambulance can often be organised more quickly than a commercial stretcher flight because it does not depend on scheduled-airline medical approval. Once we have the patient’s location, destination and recent medical information, we can give you a realistic timescale for the available options.
Fitness to fly depends on the patient’s current condition and the type of journey being considered. A patient who is not suitable for a normal airline seat may still be able to travel safely with a medical escort, on a stretcher, or by dedicated air ambulance.
We review recent medical information, mobility, oxygen requirements, medication, recent surgery or injury and the risk of deterioration during travel. For a scheduled airline journey, the airline’s medical department has the final say on approval.

If hospital admission is required, the receiving hospital or clinical team normally needs to confirm acceptance before the journey. We can coordinate directly with the relevant teams and arrange the UK ground ambulance for the final transfer.
Often, yes. On a private air ambulance, whether a relative can travel depends on the aircraft, patient condition, medical equipment and available payload. On a commercial flight, a relative can usually travel separately or alongside the patient if seats and airline arrangements allow.

Travel documents such as passports and visas must also be valid for the journey. Requirements vary according to nationality and circumstances, so they should be checked before travel is confirmed.
It can be, but only on selected airlines and routes. The patient must be medically suitable for scheduled airline travel, and the airline must approve the stretcher arrangement before tickets are finalised.
